The Shape of Colour

The Shape of Colour is an Exhibition of glass sculptures and abstract paintings.

This June, Adam Aaronson is taking part in Surrey Artists Open Studios in a joint exhibition with Elizabeth Hauck, the well-known abstract expressionist painter based in West Horsley in Surrey.

The exhibition will be in at Liz’s house and studio in Shere Road, West Horsley. It will include Adam’s glass sculptures in the house and garden as well as Liz’s paintings and drawings.

Supporting Tujitane

There is a story behind this exhibition, linking art in Surrey to art in Africa. For the past two years Liz has been sponsoring Visual Arts at Tujatane, Tongabezi Trust School. This school is located in Zambia, close to Victoria Falls.

In Liz’s words: “We now have the opportunity to build a Community Art Centre for the children at the school and for adults in the surrounding area. I will be donating all the proceeds from painting sales to this project. Adam is donating 20% of the ticket price of his sculptures. “The Shape of Colour” exhibition is an opportunity to support art in Surrey. Simultaneously you can help those less fortunate develop their creativity and improve their lives”

Adam is thrilled to be showing his work in such a wonderful setting and delighted to be supporting this excellent cause. We do hope you will be able to come along and join us.

The exhibition is open to the public on June 15th, 16th and 17th 11am to 5pm. It is also open the following week by appointment from June 18th -22nd.

Glass Blowing Demonstrations

Adam Aaronson will be presenting a series of Glass Blowing Demonstrations during SAOS – Surrey Artists Open Studios during June 2018. Please see below for dates and times.

These glassblowing demonstrations are free to the public and no booking is necessary.

As part of the Surrey Artist Open Studios series of events, Adam will be running his popular Taster Courses. Why not have a go at making glass yourself? You can find details by clicking here.

Adam’s glass blowing demonstrations are exciting and interesting to watch. If you are unable to visit at these times, the chances are that there will be some glassblowing to watch at most times during Open Studios, so it is worth dropping in. But we can’t guarantee a demonstration outside the published times.

When Taster courses are running, it is generally possibly to watch, space permitting.

Glass Blowing Taster Courses

Come and try your hand at one of our glass blowing taster courses with Adam Aaronson during SAOS – Surrey Artists Open Studios 2018

Click here for details about our Glass Blowing Demonstrations

These glass blowing taster courses are perfect for novices. You don’t need any experience at all, as we go through the process carefully.  We welcome children aged 9 years upwards. We have no upper age limit and the oldest student so far was aged 92!  But please advise us when you are booking if participants will be under 18 and please note that a parent or other responsible adult must accompany children. And, if you would like to make more than one item, just book two spaces!

These courses are dynamic, hands-on workshops, during which each participant makes their own coloured glass paperweight, bowl, tumbler, vase or other object from a choice of styles.

Demonstrating the process in a taster session

Each session starts with a safety briefing. Then Adam Aaronson gives a demonstration showing how you will make your glass creation, with assistance from Adam and one of his assistants, Will, Candice or Gina, to make their paperweight or other item. We adapt to each individual’s ability, giving you more or less assistance as required. Next, each person chooses their colours and style and works in turn on an individual basis with Adam and his assistant to create their unique piece. We have to anneal your glass creation overnight. Then we will need to grind and polish it. So it will usually be ready for collection 48 hours after the course. As a finishing touch we will engrave your name on the base. We very much encourage you to take photographs during the session, so don’t forget to bring your camera or phone.

Glassblowing Taster Courses

Glassblowing Taster Courses

We are introducing a new series of Glassblowing Taster Courses in early 2018. Until recently, we have only been running our short Glassblowing Taster Courses in June during Surrey Artists Open Studios.

Christmas Holiday Glassblowing Courses in Surrey

However, these have been so popular that we have decided to run more Glassblowing Taster Courses this year. But we are still running our half-day courses on a regular basis as well. We also continue to offer the opportunity to develop your skills and currently have a number of students who come and blow glass on a regular basis.

Dates and Times

These short Glassblowing Taster Courses, which last around 90 minutes, take place on Fridays and Saturdays. On most Fridays there are four sessions, two in the morning, at 9.30am and 11.30am and two in the afternoon at 2pm and 4pm. A couple of times a month, we are running courses on Saturday mornings, at 9.30am and 11.30am. There will also be some Saturdays when we have afternoon sessions as well. The calendar shows courses from the end of January to the end of March.

You can see available dates here and also book online

Choice of pieces to make

You can choose to blow a tumbler, bowl, vase or scent bottle. Or you can opt to make a paperweight, heart, bird or other solid item. The course costs £50 (inc VAT) per piece and you can book more than one space if you want to make more than one piece. Some people might want to make three or four pieces and that’s fine. But if that’s what you’re thinking you may find it more worthwhile to do our half day course.

Glassblowing Short Taster Course

SAOS Surrey Artists Open Studios

During SAOS we will be running extra days with our short glass blowing taster courses. These will be available to book over the coming weeks.

What to wear

All safety equipment and materials are provided but please wear covered shoes and clothing suitable for a workshop environment.

We start each session with a safety briefing. Then Adam Aaronson gives a demonstration showing the method that each person will use to make the item of their choice, with assistance from Adam and one of his assistants, Will, Candice or Gina.

Next, choose your colours and style and work in turn on an individual basis with Adam and his assistant to create your unique piece.

No experience necessary

We adapt to each individual’s ability, giving you more or less assistance as required. This event is great fun to do on your own, or together with a group of family and friends.

You will probably take lots of photographs, during your glassblowing short taster course. So don’t forget to charge up your camera or your phone! Feel free to post images on instagram with the hashtag #adamaaronsonglass. Here is a link to our instagram page and also our Facebook page.

Your glass creation (s) needs to anneal in a kiln overnight. Our team will then grind and polish the base before signing it with your name, so usually you can collect your work on the following Friday.

We can arrange delivery to a UK address. This costs £10.
